About Pasting a Component Pointed by Engineering Connections

When you copy a component involved in an engineering connection and repositionable during the update in this engineering connection, the paste mechanism will create a new instance of the component, duplicate the engineering connection, and create relations with the new instance.

If the component is not repositionable in an engineering connection, the new instance of the component will be created, but not the engineering connection.

This behavior is managed by the Engineering Connections are duplicated when copying and pasting a component they move option, seeEngineering Connection.

This page discusses:

The duplicated engineering connections are created under the same level where the component is pasted in the product structure.

According to the location of the pasted component in the product structure the engineering connections creation may differ.

Pasting at the same Level

The component is pasted at the same level as the existing component.

The relations in the new created engineering connections keep pointing the non-copied components as in the existing engineering connections.

Pasting at a higher Level

The component is pasted at a higher level than the existing component.

The relations in new created engineering connections keep pointing the non-copied components as in the existing engineering connections. Remember that the other components are pointed through the instance path from their parent components at the same level as the pasted component.

Notes:
  • If an existing engineering connection is not oriented the new one stills not oriented whether the target is repositionable or not. However if the target is not repositionable only the copied component will move during the update.
  • Existing contextual engineering connection may become non-contextual.

Pasting at a lower Level

The component is pasted at a lower level than the existing component.

The other relations in new created engineering connections keep pointing the non-copied components as in the existing engineering connections.

Notes:
  • New engineering connections may become contextual.
  • All Impact On relations pointing out the parent of the new engineering connection change to Impacted By relations.
  • Due to inconsistency, no engineering connection will be created if you paste the component under an impacted component by the existing engineering connection itself.

Pasting elsewhere in the Product Structure

The component is pasted at the new location.

The other relations in new created engineering connections keep pointing the non-copied components as in the existing engineering connections.

Notes:
  • Most of time new engineering connections become contextual.
  • All Impact On relations pointing out the parent of the new engineering connection change to Impacted By relations.

Pasting in another Product Structure

Only the component is pasted, no engineering connection is created.

Pasting Multiple Components

When you copy several components involved in the same engineering connection as repositionable, the relations in the new engineering connection are created with the new component instances.
