Introductory Concepts

With Materials Registration, you can register substances to establish their identity.

This page discusses:

Substance

A substance is a description of a single idealized unit that you can use to define chemical or biological matter. For example, sucrose.

Identifier

An identifier is an assigned identification label that classifies a substance, allowing you to group similar substances together.

You can click an identifier to view its information and all substances that share it. You can also click a substance to view the substance information.

Lot

A lot is a physical instance of a material that can be tracked.

Material

A material is a description of the matter from which things are made, including its physical and chemical properties.

The material might have a substance constituency and physical layout. The physical layout is the arrangement of the constituent substance units in space.

The material can be heterogeneous or homogeneous. Heterogeneous materials have different values for the same property at different physical points. Homogeneous materials have consistent properties throughout the material.

Note: You can only view and create materials from Materials Management.
