Threads

You can apply threads to the geometry by adding or cutting material from the body.

Standard Specifies ANSI Inch, ASME Metric, DIN, ISO Custom Inch, and Custom Metric standards for the thread.
Custom Custom Inch and Custom Metric specifies the thread according to your input. You can create custom threads by defining the diameter and threads per inch or millimeters per thread of the thread. Custom Inch and Custom Metric options are available only for Cosmetic threads..

  1. From the Feature section of the action bar, click Hole dropdown, click Thread .

    Tip: In the top of the dialog box, you can switch between Cut , Add , Cosmetic and Physical . Select any of the following thread methods:

    Cut. Creates a thread feature by removing material from the selected body.
    Add. Creates a thread feature by adding material to the selected body.
    Cosmetic Creates a cosmetic representation of a thread.
    Physical Creates thread geometry, adding to or cutting from the selected body.
  2. In the work area, select a circular edge to use as the Start location for the thread.
  3. Optional: In the Offset box, enter a value to specify the distance from the Start location on where to start the thread. To reverse the Offset direction, click .

    No Offset entered starts the thread at the selected edge.

  5. From the Depth menu, specify the thread length.
    OptionDescription
    Blind Blind specifies the thread length.

    In the Distance box, enter a value to specify the distance from the Start location to the end of threads.
    Diameter * Multiplier Diameter * Multiplier. Specifies the thread length by the pre-defined or entered multiple of the diameter.
    Multiplier
    From the Multiplier menu, select 1, 1.5, 2, or User Define Value.
    Fully Threaded Fully Threaded. Specifies the thread length extends the fill length of the selected hole or shaft.
    From Hole Feature From Hole Feature. Specifies the thread depth using the thread depth value from the feature.
    Up to Geometry Up to Geometry. Specifies that the thread ends at the Selected Entity.

    In the End Offset box, enter a value to specify the distance from the End location to the end of the thread. To reverse the direction, click .
    Up to Next Up to Next. Specifies that the thread ends at the next entity that intersects the hole or shaft.
    Turn Count Turn Count. Specifies the thread length by the number of turns along the length of hole or shaft.
  6. From the Standard menu, specify the thread standard:

    ASME Metric Specifies ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Metric dimensional standards.
    DIN Specifies DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) dimensional standard.
    ISO Specifies ISO (International Organisation for Standardization) dimensional standards.
    Custom Inch You can customize the thread using inch-based values.
    Note: This is available only for Cosmetic thread.
    Custom Metric You can customize the thread using metric-based values.
    Note: This is available only for Cosmetic thread.
  7. Specify the Thread Type.

    Straight Defines the available thread sizes for straight tapped holes.
    Note: This option is available for ASME Inch, ASME Metric, DIN, and ISO standards only.
    Bottoming Defines the available thread sizes for bottoming tapped holes.
    Note: This option is available for ASME Inch, ASME Metric, DIN, and ISO standards only.
    Straight Pipe Defines the available thread sizes for straight pipe tapped holes.
    Note: This option is available for ASME Inch, ASME Metric, DIN, and ISO standards only.
  8. Select the Size from the dropdown.
  9. Expand Thread Options and review the following.
    • For Cosmetic threads, you can enable Trim threads to geometry. For Physical threads, you can enable Quick Preview.
    • From Thread handedness choose
      • Right-handed. Specifies the thread rotation as right-handed (clockwise).
      • Left-handed. Specifies the thread rotation as left-handed (counterclockwise).
  10. Expand the Display Options, and review the following
    • Display through geometry. Displays hidden threads that are inside of, or behind geometry.
    • Display threads. Displays the thread pitch wire.
    • Display end of thread. Displays the end of the thread.
    • When the Display threads is enabled, the Override thread count display is available. You can override the number of turns the thread makes from the start to the end of the thread. Enter the Count value greater than '0'. The default value is '1'.

    Note: The Display Options are available only for Cosmetic threads.
