Narrow_Surface_Segment

This check verifies whether the model geometry contains surface segments smaller than the specified value. If so, the segments are considered as incorrect.

Note: Every direction of the model geometry is checked.

Context

The check verifies the following types of narrow surface segments:

  • Surface segments too narrow in either direction compared to the specified value.
  • Surface segments too narrow compared to an adjacent segment (the length ratio in either direction is smaller than the specified ratio).

Narrow surface segments are patches smaller than a specified value, and in at least one parameter direction.

Narrow elements can be considered as degenerate and invalid. They can cause discontinuities or generate gaps in the topology when they are deleted.

Mini elements are often created by automatisms of the system, such as the automatic closing of gaps during a data transfer from an external system.

Surface segments are also considered as too narrow when the length ratio of the adjacent segment borders is too small in the same parameter direction and in the same surface. If the ratio exceeds 1:100 for example, this can result in a poor segmentation.
