Preview EBOM Page

The Preview EBOM page provides a preview of the Engineering BOM (EBOM) structure and its selected parts for a product configuration. Visual cues in the table are used to indicate conflicts in parts for the EBOM generation process.

The missing parts in the EBOM generation process can be resolved iteratively by resolving the parts and clicking Apply. Each time you click Apply, modifications made for parts are applied to the associated features for future product configurations.

To successfully preview a BOM, the product configuration must be associated with the top-level part of the model version and must have a part family as GBOM. When generating a BOM, a specific logical feature level is considered mandatory only if it has been assigned a part family on the GBOM. If there is no associated part family, the logical feature is skipped in the resulting BOM.

To access this page:

  1. Open the product configuration. See Product Configuration Properties Page.
  2. From the page toolbar or Actions menu, click Preview EBOM.

Columns

Section Column Description
Display Name The marketing name of the item. This name is used for model version data sheets.
Quick Actions For leaf-level logical features only. An icon that initiates an action:

Icon Description
Duplicate row to allow the logical feature to resolve to different parts. You can then edit, including choosing the part, for the duplicate row.
Remove a duplicate row. You can remove all rows except for one for any logical feature.

Name The name of the item. Click to open that item.
Variant/Option

The uncoupled variant and option effectivity expression defined for the logical feature.

You can edit the effectivity until the parent logical feature reaches the Released state. See Building or Editing an Effectivity Expression.

Product Engineers must be licensed for both Variant Analysis and Reuse and Configured BOM to edit the effectivity.

Note: This column can only have a value when effectivity has been uncoupled.
Effectivity

The coupled effectivity expression defined for the logical feature.

Note: This column can only have a value when effectivity has not been uncoupled.
Selected Part Information Part Type Default or Custom
Part Number The part number. Click any link in this column to view the EBOM for that part.

An EBOM can be generated only if a part number is assigned. Part Number is a mandatory column and must not be removed when creating a custom table view.

If the inclusion rule for the feature does not evaluate to True, ??? is displayed in this column and you need to select a valid part for the rule.

Existing parts are evaluated only if all of the variant effectivities corresponding to all design variants are defined and match. Otherwise, these partially-qualified parts are moved to Optional Parts and ??? is displayed in this column so that you can select the correct part.

Phase The phase assigned to the part family used to create (generate) subsequent parts:

Possible Phases Meaning
Development The new part will be created in the Development phase.
Production The new part will be created in the Production phase.

Change Required Indicates whether the part is under change control and needs a change action in the In Work state to generate an EBOM:

Change Controlled Value Description
Blank There is no part listed.
Disabled The part is not under change control.
Enabled; Any Change The part is under change control, but the associated change action is in the Prepare, Complete, In Work (Cancel), or In Approval (Cancel) state.
Hyperlink to a change action The part is under change control and the associated change action is in the In Work, In Work (Hold), In Approval, In Approval (Hold) or Approved state.

Click to open the change action's Properties page.

Parts generated from a part family on this page are always created with change control disabled. Use the Set Change Required command on the part's Properties page to enable change control for the part. Use the Unset Change Required command on the part's Properties page to disable change control for a part.
Default Part If a part is missing from the feature, the following actions are available:

Create Part as Default Creates a default part.

If you add a new part as a default part, you must click Apply to save your changes to the EBOM structure.

Add Existing Part as Default Adds an existing default part.

If you add an existing part as a default part, you must click Apply to save your changes to the EBOM structure.

Generate Part as Default Generates the part as a default part.
Replace by Create Part as Default Replaces the part with a new default part.
Replace by Add Existing Part as Default Replaces the part with an existing default part.

Note: If you create a custom table view, do not remove the Default Part column or you will not be able to execute those actions.

(Visual Cue) An icon that indicates a possible conflict for the part in the BOM generation process.

Icon Meaning Description
Higher Revision A higher revision of the part exists. You can add or replace a part with a different revision of the part.
Duplicate Parts Click to open the Optional Choices dialog box. Select the part, then click Submit.
Used in BOM Valid parts of top-level features.
Obsolete Part The part has become obsolete but has not been removed from the feature. You need to replace the part for the BOM generation process.
EBOM is Different The part has been replaced in the BOM generated from the product configuration and has not been replaced in the technical model version structure. A comparison is made based on type, name, and revision for top-level child objects.

Note: If you create a custom table view, do not remove the Visual Cue column.
Rev The part revision number or code.
State The current state of the item in its lifecycle.
Type The type or subtype.
BOM Details

If an existing GBOM part is used to resolve a logical feature, the details from the GBOM override those of the logical feature. If a new part is used, then the logical feature values are used. You can edit any of the values for the product configuration, and if you want to update the GBOM with those edits, select Global for the Update BOM Details column.

F/N The find number is an ID that is used on drawings as bubble call outs. Find numbers are usually integer values: 1,2,3,...
Quantity The quantity of the object included in the model version or feature. If this value is required, you can enter a value and then click Apply to submit the changes.
Note: Quantity is a mandatory column and must not be removed when creating a custom table view.
Usage Standard, Reference, Per Sales Order, or As Required
Component Location Similar to reference designator, but is used to give additional location information and/or can be used by industries other than electronics. For example, it can be used to indicate which motor is failing all the time, the one by the window or the one by the furnace.
Reference Designator The reference designator ID is used on printed circuit boards to indicate the location of where an electronic component is to be inserted. Reference designators are usually values like R1, R2, R7 or C1, C5 ('R' stands for resistor and 'C' for capacitor).
Update BOM Details

If you entered any BOM details that override the BOM attributes, choose an option:

Option Description
Global The overridden values must be updated on the GBOM for all parts with the appropriate effectivity.
Local The overridden values apply to this product configuration only.

Important: These columns must be present for you to resolve conflicts and execute actions. If you use the tool to design a custom view, do not remove and of these columns (although you can rearrange them):

Generate EBOM Generates the EBOM for the product configuration.
Note: When you generate an EBOM, only the F/N, Qty, Usage, Component Location, and Reference Designator field values set in the Preview BOM are assigned in the EBOM. The other field values are not assigned in the EBOM.
