Creating a Symmetric Plies Stacking

You can apply a symmetry to plies to copy a sequence of plies.

Note: This task is available in Composites Design.

  1. From the Plies Design section of the action bar, click Symmetric Plies Stacking .
  2. Select a plies group.
  3. Decide to create a symmetry with a pivot or not.

  • With the Non-pivot option, a new ply is created for each existing ply as follows and an icon of manual creation is displayed on each ply.
    • Ply.1 (original)
    • Ply.2 (original)
    • Ply.3 (original)
    • Ply.4 (mirror of Ply.3)
    • Ply.5 (mirror of Ply.2)
    • Ply.6 (mirror of Ply.1)
  • With the Pivot option, a new ply is created for each existing ply, except for the last one (here Ply.3) is used as the pivot, and an icon of manual creation is displayed on each ply.
    • Ply.1 (original)
    • Ply.2 (original)
    • Ply.3 (original and pivot)
    • Ply.4 (mirror of Ply.2)
    • Ply.5 (mirror of Ply.1)
Note: The order of the mirrored plies is inverted (the last mirrored ply corresponds to the first original one, the penultimate to the second, and so on).
Warning:
  • There is no link between symmetric plies. In our last example, if Ply.1 is modified, Ply.19 is not impacted.
  • You can create a symmetry on a stacking:
    • If it contains only one Plies Group, only the Non-pivot option is available.
    • If it contains several Plies Groups, the Pivot option is available and the symmetry is applied to the last Plies Group.
  • The plies of a copied ply are not inverted as the manufacturing order cannot be modified.
  • If a Sequence is empty, or contains several plies, this is taken into account.
