Template Lifecycle

In Engineering BOM and Product Specification Management, you can use a template to ensure that there is consistency in the views and reports about product data. You can move a template through the template lifecycle using a change order.

Note: When Engineering BOM and Product Specification Management is installed, the Change Order (CO) is used to move a Template Object to the Release state.

The template lifecycle includes the following states:

This page discusses:

Preliminary

When you create, copy, or revise a template, the latest revision of the template is added to the change order. The template objects are grouped under a change action based on the organization of the template. The owner of the change order sets the Assignee, the senior Assignee, and the approval list based on the business process needed.

To promote the template from the Preliminary state to the Review state, the Template Administrator:

  • Creates at least one section connected to a configurable report.
  • Fills in all the claimed attributes information.
  • Closes all open tasks.
  • Promotes the change action to the "In Approval" state.

Review

The system promotes the template from the Review state to the Approved state when there are no open tasks.

Approved

The system promotes the template from the Approved state to the Release state when there are no open tasks and the connected change action is in the Complete state.

Release

When the template is promoted to the Release state, the system:

  • Promotes the previous revision of the template to the obsolete state.
  • Updates all objects of the template that are in the first state of the lifecycle and connected to the previous revision. Connection to the previous revision is removed and connection to the new revision is established.
  • Promotes all associated template sections and configurable reports to the active state.

Obsolete

You cannot modify an obsolete template, and you cannot promote or demote the template to any other state.
