Material Definition Database Design Import

Database Design Import (DBDI) enables the migration of CATIA V5 data stored in a legacy database into 3DEXPERIENCE.

This topic specifies the import correspondences between V5 data types and 3DEXPERIENCE content types, and the import result. The statuses for import results are fully imported, partially imported, and not imported (-).

This page discusses:

Common Import Behavior

This section describes the behavior of CATIA V5 data stored in legacy databases imported into 3DEXPERIENCE that is common to all connectors.

Considerations

You should take the following considerations into account:

Material Optimization
Material options enable you to customize DBDI-related aspects of material data import. To specify these options, select Me > Preferences > General > File-based Design Import > Materials. For more information about material options for DBDI, see Installation and Administration: 3DEXPERIENCE platform- Administration: Native Apps Preferences Guide: General: File-based Design Import: Materials.
Import Exceptions or Limitations
  • The material name in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is specified by the name in V5.

  • In V5, a material domain is not automatically created with a material. If necessary, a domain is added after the material is created. Migrating a material without a domain from V5 to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform creates a material without any associated domains.
  • Only expressed applied materials are imported. Expressed applied materials are those taken into account by the priority rules and inheritance settings specified in V5.
  • If you select Optimization > Similarity function > Full, only the materials with a Basic, Custom or 3D Material rendering domain are supported. The materials with another rendering domain type are duplicated.
Import Mode
Do not use simultaneously the Name and Full similarity functions.
Use the same mode for all your imports.
For example, if you import a part with applied materials in the Full mode and then import the same part in the Name mode, the system may not recognize the previously imported materials and create duplicates.
Translation of Data from the ELFINI Linear Elastic Domain
The ELFINI Linear Elastic domain is no longer supported in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. If you translate V5 material data into the current release, the DBDI tool first checks for linear elastic data in the Abaqus for CATIA V5 (AFC) domain. If the AFC domain includes a linear elastic definition, DBDI translates the AFC material data to the current release and ignores all material data from the ELFINI Linear Elastic domain.

If the AFC domain does not include a linear elastic definition, DBDI translates many of the data in the ELFINI Linear Elastic domain into the Simulation domain of an existing material definition in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. For more information, including the mappings between material characteristics in ELFINI and their equivalent values in the Simulation domain, see Simulation: Physics Simulation: Material Definition Guide: Reference Information: Material File-based Design Import: Upgrade of Materials with ELFINI Linear Elastic Domain.

ENOVIA VPM V5 Database to 3DEXPERIENCE

Materials applied as links on parts and features in CATPart documents are supported in DBDI for models saved both in the database (CATParts) and on the disk (CATMaterials). To make it available, copy the CATMaterial file in a folder and activate the Other folders option in Me > Preferences > General > Search Order. Launching the DBDI of the CATPart will automatically launch the FBDI of the CATMaterial and apply the material in the 3DEXPERIENCE.
