Monitoring Variables on the Diagram

From the Variable Browser you can select variables to monitor on the diagram. The variable names and values are displayed in immersive panels connected to the objects where the variables are located. This allows you to dynamically see the variables in the context of the simulated model.

Before you begin:
  1. Open a model and simulate it.

For more information, see Simulating a Behavior.

  1. In the Variable Browser, display the column Pinned. See Working with the Variable Browser.
    The Pinned column is displayed.

By default, all variables are set to Not pinned and the Pinned column is empty.

  2. Select the variables you want to display by clicking, for each variable, the Not pinned icon.
The Not pinned icon is changed to the Pinned icon, indicating that the variable is selected to be monitored on the diagram.
  3. To display the selected variables on the diagram, replay the animation.

For information about replaying the animation, see Replaying an Animation.

Note: In some cases, for example, if your model contains 3D objects, you by default do not have to replay the animation to see the result. For more information about this, see Managing Simulation Options Using the Simulation Options Dialog Box.

Important: To display monitored variables on the diagram, you must also, in the Simulation Options dialog box, activate the setting Display Pinned Variables. This setting is activated by default. For more information, see Managing Simulation Options Using the Simulation Options Dialog Box.

    The following is the result:
    • The variable names and values are displayed in immersive panels on the diagram.

The variables are grouped in immersive panels corresponding to the objects they reside in.

Note: You can drag the immersive panel displaying the variables. A thin line indicates to which object the panel belongs to.

    • If you change the diagram by, for example, zooming or panning, the immersive panels adapts to the result.
    • If you create new windows, corresponding new immersive panels are created.
    • The values are dynamically updated when you play the animation.
    • You can save the pinned variables, together with the plotted variables, as variable selections. See Saving Monitored and Plotted Variables as Variable Selections.
  4. You can dynamically select what variables to monitor by clicking the icons in the Pinned column of the Variable Browser.

Note: The selection of variables to monitor is lost when you close the session.
