Creating and Recognizing a Wire EDM Feature

You can create machinable wire EDM features and then assign them to operations in sequence.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: Create a wire EDM machine.

Create a Wire EDM Feature

You can create a wire EDM feature that defines geometries that you can use in wire EDM operations then view wire EDM features.

  1. From the Wire EDM section of the action bar, click Wire EDM Feature .

The Wire EDM Feature workflow appears in the work area.

  2. Follow the workflow instructions to create a wire EDM feature.

A Wire EDM Feature entity is added to the Manufacturing Program.

The Wire EDM Feature dialog box appears.

  3. Click in the title bar of the dialog box to edit the name of the feature, such as WireEDMFeature.x.
  4. In the Mandatory section, verify the mandatory input parameters.

Note: The following icons are used to describe the status of a parameter:
    Icon Description
    Parameter defined.
    Mandatory parameter not defined.
    Optional parameter not defined.
    Parameter not up to date.
    Broken link.

  5. Optional: Do any of the following:
    1. Click to remove the input parameter.
    2. Click to display additional information on the parameter in the work area.
    3. Click to display the parameter's context menu.
  6. In the Optional section, verify the optional input parameters.
If main and auxiliary contours have same number of edges, numbered synchronization lines are displayed. These lines provide a preview of the imposed axes used to compute wire paths. They are computed using the edge contour extremities. .

  7. To finish, click OK.

The wire EDM feature is created as WireEDMFeature.x. It is visible in the Manufacturing View.

Manage Synchronization Lines

You can use the Manage Sync Lines dialog box to edit and delete automatically generated synchronization lines. Synchronization lines provide a preview of the imposed axes used to compute wire paths. They are computed using the edge contour extremities.

  1. From the Wire EDM Feature dialog box, select Manage Sync Lines.
  2. In the Manage Sync Lines dialog box that appears, select Edit/Reset .
The list of synchronization lines generated by default become available for modification.
  3. Do any of the following:
    1. To add a synchronization line, click Add . Select a point on the Main Contour, then select a point on the Auxiliary Contour.
    2. To edit a synchronization line, double-click the required synchronization line from the list, or directly in the work area.
    3. To delete a synchronization line, click Delete .
    4. To reset all modifications, click Reset .
All modified synchronization lines are removed from the default synchronization lines are displayed both in the list and in the work area.
  4. Under Check Sync Points, define the maximum deviation angle and click Check to check the validity of the synchronization lines against the specified deviation angle.
  5. To finish, click OK.

Recognize and Sort Wire EDM Features

You can recognize and sort wire EDM features in the Manufacturing View.

  1. From the Wire EDM section of the action bar, click Wire EDM Feature Recognition , then select the target features from the Manufacturing View.
The wire EDM features are recognized and are displayed in the Manufacturing View.
  2. Right-click the header of the Manufacturing View, then click Sort By WEDM Features to sort the view by wire EDM features.
  3. Select a sorted feature in the Manufacturing View.

The corresponding feature is highlighted in the work area.

Note: For holes, the command sets a circular profile as the threading point instead of creating a new point. For pockets, the command sets nothing for the threading point. You can manually select and set a threading point.
