About Change Decomposition

Change decomposition enables you have more than one change order for a change request to help you manage complex change requests. Change decomposition allows change actions based on multiple change orders to be distributed to and implemented at multiple locations.

A change request (CR) captures the intent of a change and describes the requested changes. A change order (CO) is created in response to the change request and is used to monitor and track the changes throughout the change process. One or more change actions (CA) may be generated from the CO to implement and deliver the changes described in the CR.

Typically, only one CO is created for a CR. For complex change requests that require changes at multiple manufacturing sites or by multiple groups, all users would be limited to using the same CO for managing all changes. Change decomposition lets you create multiple COs to manage CAs for the various sites or groups to implement the changes. Child COs cannot be created from the Change Orders category, but Parent and Child CO's hierarchy would be displayed. Unlike other CRs, change decomposition CRs require you to manually create all the COs (and child COs) required for the change decomposition. All COs assigned to the CR must be in the Completed state for the CR to be completed.

With change decomposition enabled, the workflow between the CR, COs, and CAs is:

  1. The Product Engineer creates the CR and assigns proposed changes to it.
  2. The Product Engineer assigns the CR to a Change Coordinator and moves it to the Evaluate lifecycle state.
  3. The Change Coordinator views the proposed changes. Additional changes may be added. CAs are assigned for Impact Analysis.
  4. All assessments and Impact Analysis are completed, Approvers are assigned, and the CR moves to the Evaluation Review lifecycle state.
  5. After the Change Coordinator approves the CR, the CR moves to In Process.
  6. The Change Coordinator creates one or more COs as required to complete the CR.
  7. The Change Coordinator promotes the CO(s) to the In Work lifecycle state.
  8. The change coordinator promotes the CO(s), CAs, and CR to their respective lifecycles to complete the change request.
