Managing Symbols in Diagram View

Creating Symbol Instance from Drafting 2D Component

You can create a standalone symbol instance from an existing Drafting 2D component and place it in a diagram view or in the background view.

Note: Only 2D component references designed in detail view can be selected.

In the following scenario, the 2D component is placed in the diagram view. The steps remain the same when inserting the 2D component in a background view.

Before you begin:
  • Under a logical reference, create a diagram view.
  • Open in session the 2D component created in a detail view.
  1. Right-click the diagram view and select Import 2D Component as Symbol .
  2. Click the tab containing the 2D component and select the component.
In the diagram view, a preview of the symbol instance appears and follows the pointer.
  3. Click the diagram view to place the symbol instance.
The symbol is placed and images and text, if any, are added in their respective formats. Table, hatching, arrows and balloons are added as shapes. By default the name of the new symbol is copied from selected 2D component
    Notes:
    • There is no link between the new symbol instance and the Drafting 2D component. If the 2D component is modified, the symbol instance needs to be recreated to display these changes.
    • If any Drafting specific properties such as constraints are set on the 2D component contains, they are not imported into the new symbol instance.
