Creating a Part Family

Part families contain parts that typically share similar naming conventions, such the same base number, sequence pattern, prefix, and suffix. When you create a part family, you define the naming convention for all parts that will be included in the family.

Required Access Roles:

  • Baseline: Leader

Once the initial information is entered for the new part family, you can access the Part Family Properties page. In this page, you can edit details or modify and access the members of the part family.

  1. Do one of the following:
    • From the top bar , click > Engineering > Part > Create Part Family.
    • Click Create New from the page Actions menu or toolbar on the Part Family list page.

    Only users with Create access for part families will see this link.

  2. Add attributes, as required. The Type, Title, and Collaborative Policy are required. The part family name is autogenerated and other fields are optional.

    The following are attributes of part families:

    Field Description
    Type (required) Click to select the type or subtype of the part family.
    Title (required) The common identifier for the part family. The title does not have to be unique.
    Description Details that describe the part family.
    Pattern Separator Character that is used between the prefix and the part name; also between the part name and the sequence pattern.
    Base Number Starting number for the part name.
    Name Generator If the name generator on value is specified as On, all parts added to the family will be automatically named.
    Suffix Pattern The alphanumeric character pattern at the end of every part name that identifies the part family, for example, -0001. All parts with the same suffix are members of the same part family.
    Prefix Pattern The alphanumeric character pattern at the beginning of every part name that identifies the part family. For example, if the part family is Screws, the prefix pattern could be SCR.
    Sequence Pattern Sequence pattern to use in naming every part included in the part family. See Sequence Patterns.
    Collaborative Policy (required) The policy that governs the business behavior and lifecycle of the part family.

  3. When you have filled in all required fields, click OK to add the new part family to the database.
