Material Definition File-based Design Import

File-based Design Import (FBDI) enables content migration from V5 to 3DEXPERIENCE.

This page discusses:

V5 to 3DEXPERIENCE Data Import Table

The following table describes import correspondences between V5 file-based data and 3DEXPERIENCE content. The statuses for import results are fully imported, partially imported, and not imported (-).

V5 Data Type 3DEXPERIENCE Content Type Import Result
CATMaterial documents containing material libraries Catalog Fully imported, providing the Use Mapping Tables option in the Import dialog box is selected.
Material families Chapter Fully imported, providing the Use Mapping Tables option in the Import dialog box is selected.
Materials applied as links on parts and features in CATPart documents. Core materials applied to 3D shape instances or features inside a 3D shape instance. Partially imported with data structure modification.
Materials applied as copies on parts and features in CATPart documents. Core materials and covering materials are created. The core material is applied to 3D shape instances or features inside a 3D shape instance. Partially imported with data structure modification.
Materials applied to products and instances of CATProduct documents. Covering materials Fully imported.
Materials applied to a CATProduct document pointed by CATAnalysis documents. Core materials applied to finite element model structural properties Fully imported.
Materials Core and covering materials Partially imported with data structure modification.
Rendering properties Rendering domain Fully imported.
Analysis properties Simulation domain Fully imported.
Drawing properties Drafting domain Fully imported.

Considerations

The following considerations should be taken into account:

Material Optimization
Material optimization options enable you to customize FBDI-related aspects of material data import. This optimization ensures a maximal reuse of existing materials from within the current session's database.

To specify these options, select Me > Preferences > Legacy Preferences > General > File-based Design Import > Materials tab.

Table 1. Material Optimization OptionsChoose from the following options:
Similarity function Full
Name
When mapping tables are not used Activate optimization
Do not activate optimization

For more information about material options for FBDI, see Native Apps Preferences.

Import Mode

Do not simultaneously use the Name and Full similarity functions.

Use the same mode for all your imports.

For example, if you import a part with applied materials in the Full mode and then import the same part in the Name mode, the system may not recognize the previously imported materials and create duplicates.

Import Exceptions or Limitations
  • The material name in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is specified by the name in V5.

  • In V5, a material domain is not automatically created with a material.

If necessary, a domain is added after the material is created.

Migrating a material without a domain from V5 to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform creates a material without any associated domains.

  • Only expressed applied materials are imported.

Expressed applied materials are those taken into account by the priority rules and inheritance settings specified in V5.

  • If you select Optimization > Similarity function > Full, only the materials with a Basic, Custom or 3D Material rendering domain are supported.

The materials with another rendering domain type are duplicated.

Translation of Data from the ELFINI Linear Elastic Domain
The ELFINI Linear Elastic domain is no longer supported in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

If you translate V5 material data into the current release, the FBDI tool first checks for linear elastic data in the Abaqus for CATIA V5 (AFC) domain.

If the AFC domain includes a linear elastic definition, FBDI translates the AFC material data to the current release and ignores all material data from the ELFINI Linear Elastic domain.

If the AFC domain does not include a linear elastic definition, FBDI translates many of the data in the ELFINI Linear Elastic domain into the Simulation domain of an existing material definition in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

For more information, including the mappings between material characteristics in ELFINI and their equivalent values in the Simulation domain, see Content and Simulation Apps: Physics Simulation: Material Definition Guide: Reference Information: Material File-based Design Import: Upgrade of Materials with ELFINI Linear Elastic Domain.

Examples

A V5, CATMaterial document has no equivalent in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, but its content is imported as shown below:
