About Positioning Analysis

When the geometry is changed, for example the thickness of stacking parts was reduced, or the location points was changed, you can use Positioning Analysis to reposition fasteners included in a bundle.

This page discusses:

Selection of Objects

To reposition fasteners, you must select fastener instances by doing one of the following:

  • Select fasteners instances from the tree or the 3D area. Alternatively, the selection can be done by selecting Selection Wizard.
  • Select bundles: all the fasteners grouped in the bundles are automatically selected.

Analyzing the Selected Fasteners

Clicking Analyse selected fasteners searches the points with which the fasteners were created, and the surfaces from the pilot part from which the fastener normal was computed.

Once done, the results of the analysis are displayed in three categories in the dialog box:

  • Fasteners in correct position. All the fasteners in this category are shown in a white preview. They are in a correct position and therefore do not need any repositioning.
  • Fastener position computation successful. All the fasteners in this category are shown in a green preview. This group represents the fasteners for which the point as well as the support surfaces are successfully found. These fasteners can be repositioned.
Tip: To exclude a fastener from the repositioning, you must cancel the selection its check box in the Select column. The fastener is then moved back to its original position and its color is reset to magenta.

  • Unable to compute fastener position. All the fasteners in this category are shown in a red preview. This group represents the fasteners for which the app may not compute a correct position. This category provides the Keep failed fastener in selection on command exit option. This capability lets you keep these fasteners in the selection after exiting the command. p

To try to reposition these fasteners, you can do one of the following:

    • Edit them.
    • Delete them if they are no longer valid.
    • Run Report.
    • Rerun Positioning Analysis , and select a correct representation.

Editing Selected Fasteners

The purpose of editing fasteners is to take corrective action on the fasteners in the red category to allow the app to compute the fastener position and the normal.

You can select the fasteners from any of the three fastener categories, and then select the Edit contextual command, or click Edit Selected Fasteners. When a fastener in the red category is successfully edited, it is moved to the green category.

Forcing Positioning

The Force position on all selected fasteners makes the fasteners disappear from the white category list. Regardless of their previous positions, all fasteners (whose geometry is found) are repositioned.

Analysis Modes for Spot Flexible Fasteners

The following options are available for spot flexible fasteners.

  • Manage Position: the fastener instance is repositioned, but there is no check on the thickness of the spot flexible fastener.
  • Manage Position and Thickness: the fastener instance is re-positioned. The thickness is computed at the new position and corrective action is taken if needed: if the new computed stacking thickness is different from the existing thickness of the fastener, then the position of the fastener's components is updated with the correct thickness.
  • Manage Thickness: the fastener instance is not re-positioned. Only the stacking thickness at the current fastner position is computed.
