Functional Tolerancing

Description of the Functional Surface (FS) of the Damper Mechanism

A Functional Surface (FS) is an unstructured set of surfaces of a part. These surfaces are designed to implement one or several functions of a part or an assembly (aerodynamic surface, hydrodynamic surface, sealing surface, bearing surface, friction surface, wearing surface, and so on).

You can create FS features in a 3D Shape using one the following commands:

  • Functional Surface Creation : Creation of an FS feature in the edited 3D Shape
  • Functional Surface Instantiation : Creation of an FS feature from an FS template PLM object into the edited 3D Shape.

FS templates can be created and managed using the Mechanical Interface Templates Capture app.

  • Functional Surface Reveal : Automatic creation of FS features from copied geometric features (copy as result, copy as specification, power copy, user feature, etc.).

Damper Mechanism Example: FS of the Damper Part

FS Damper Cylinder

It implements the shock absorption function.

The Functional Surface dialog box lets you create and manage the size, form, and surface texture specifications applied to the FS.

You can indicate which failures might occur if the GD&T specification is poorly controlled.
