About Effectivity for Product Configurations

Effectivity for a product configuration is determined based on a combination of its start effectivity date and the feature option effectivity. When used with Project Management, milestones can also be used to determine the effectivity of the product configuration.

This page discusses:

Effectivity without Project Management

When used without Project Management, the effectivity for a product configuration is based on a start and end date, plus any effectivity defined for features included in the product configuration.

Effectivity with Project Management

When used with Project Management, Product Managers can select a project to govern the lifecycle of their model version. That project includes a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) that can be defined with milestones. Those milestones can then be used to determine the effectivity of a product configuration.

To use milestone effectivity with a product configuration, you first need to:

  1. Create a project and define milestones in the WBS.
  2. Create a model version and define the project as a governing project.
  3. Create all logical features and variability (variants and option groups) for the product, including any date or other type of effectivity.
  4. Create the product configuration:
    1. Select a based-on model version. This model version must have the project defined as its governing project.
    2. Select a milestone.

If you select a start effectivity but do not specify a milestone, then the effectivity for the product configuration is determined based on that date and any defined feature option effectivities.
