Creating a Concept Shape from the Topology Optimization Result

You can convert the finite element representation of the selected optimized shape and iso-surface to a 3D solid model. You can also adjust the relative element density and select the finite element representation of the concept shape.

Note: You cannot generate a new solid shape for a failed or ended execution of the Compute Shape process for the finite element representation.

Before you begin: Open the Topology Optimization assistant. See Performing an Optimization Using the Topology Optimization Assistant.
  1. From the Concept section, select Concept generation.
Functional Generative Design displays a preview of the concept shape based on optimization results.
  2. Optional: To dynamically update the preview of the concept shape, click Live preview.
  3. Optional: To apply the transparency on the representation of the design space, click Transparent design area.
  4. Adjust the cutting value using the slider.
    • Click Live preview to update the model image as you make changes.
    • Click Auto to reset the value to the target value.

Functional Generative Design updates the optimized model in the work area to show the iso-surface between the elements to be retained and the elements to be removed. The result of the optimization is visualized for all the design spaces in the list or for a selected design space only.

In addition, the residual volume and the mass of the retained material are also displayed.

  5. Enter a name for the concept shape.
  6. In Output configuration, define the following types:
    OptionDescription
Subdivision surface Generates a smooth and high-quality subdivision surface.

You can select Regular patches to generate a surfaces with less regular patches but with more robustness. You can also select Targeted number of faces and then define the number of faces for the concept shape. The result may be an approaching number.

Tesselated shape Generates a smooth and robust tesselated surface.
Skeleton wire Builds a wireframe skeleton from the optimization results.
  7. Click Generate.
Functional Generative Design creates a 3D solid model from the finite element representation of the optimized shape by replacing the selected iso-surface with surfaces and filling the remaining volume.
