Synchronizing External Parameters

You can synchronize external parameters between a drawing and another representation.

Before you begin:
  • Open a 3D shape representation.
  • Create a length parameter on this representation, with a value of 10mm. This parameter should be displayed in the tree. For further information on creating parameters for a 3D shape, see Knowledge Basics User's Guide: Creating and Working with Parameters.
  1. Go to Me > Preferences > Common Preferences > Object Properties > 3D Shape > 3D Shape Infrastructure. expander, select Keep link with selected objects check box, then click OK.

For further information on the General tab, see Engineering Rules Capture User's Guide. First of all, you are going to create new parameter in your drawing based on the 3D shape representation parameter.

  2. From the Tools section of the action bar, click Formula .
  3. Select Length in the box.
  4. In the Formulas dialog box, click New parameter of type.
  5. Position the pointer in the value box and click Add Formula.
  6. In the 3D shape tree, select the Length parameter. `External Parameters\Length.1` is displayed in the Formula Editor dialog box.
  7. Click OK to close the Formula Editor dialog box. In the Formulas dialog box, you can see the parameter's value is 10mm.
  8. Click OK to create the parameter.
The Length parameter is displayed in the drawing tree as an external parameter.
  9. To propagate changes between the 3D shape and the drawing, double-click the Length.1 parameter in the 3D shape tree.
  10. In the Edit Parameter dialog box, change the value from 10 to 20mm.

Back in the drawing tree, you can see a red symbol displayed on the parameter. It means it needs an update.

  11. Select the Length parameter.
  12. From the Tools section of the action bar, click Links & Relations.
  13. In the Edit Links & Relations dialog box, click Synchronize link.

The parameter is updated and a green symbol is now displayed on the parameter showing it has been synchronized.

Important: You cannot use Update to refresh the parameters. You have to synchronize them individually.
Note: If you create a text on the drawing that references the external parameters using the Attribute link option, updating the drawing will synchronize the parameters.
