Managing Character Lines

You can create one or more character lines on a subdivision surface.

A character line is defined by a set of edges and two fading edges (where the sharp edge becomes smooth). Each fading edge is defined by a start and an end that can both be modified.

Before you begin: Create a 3D shape containing a subdivision surface.
  1. From the Shape Sculpt section of the action bar, click Character Line .

You can also access this command by pressing ALT+SHIFT+C.

  2. Select the subdivision surface.
  3. From the Tools Palette, click one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Character Line Creation Creates the character line.
Character Line Remove Resets the selected character line.
Character Line Remove All Resets all character lines.
Mesh View Hides or shows the base mesh.
  4. To select the edges, press Ctrl, and then press Shift to define the end edge.
  5. Click Character Line Creation .

The start of each fading edge is defined by a double arrow and the end is defined by a dot. The zone between two fading edges is the sharp zone:

    • 1: sharp zone.
    • 2 and 3 shows the direction from sharp to smooth.
  6. Move the handles to precisely tune the start and end of the fading edges.

  7. Click Mesh View to hide the mesh for easier manipulation.

A Subdivision Character Line.x feature is added to the tree as a child of the subdivision surface. There can be only one character line feature per subdivision surface containing all the character lines defined on the subdivision surface:
