You can create one or more character lines on a
subdivision surface.
A character line is defined by a set of edges and two fading edges (where
the sharp edge becomes smooth). Each fading edge is defined by a start and an end that can
both be modified.
Before you begin: Create
a 3D shape containing a subdivision surface.
From the Shape Sculpt section of the action bar, click
Character Line .
You can also access
this command by pressing
ALT+SHIFT+C.
Select the subdivision surface.
From the Tools Palette, click one of the following:

Character Line Creation
Creates the character line.
Character Line Remove
Resets
the selected character line.
Character Line Remove All
Resets
all character lines.
Mesh View
Hides or shows the base mesh.
To select the edges, press Ctrl, and then press Shift to define the end
edge.

The start of each fading edge is defined by a double arrow and the end is defined by a dot. The zone between two fading edges is the sharp zone:
1: sharp zone.
2 and 3 shows the direction from sharp to smooth.
Move the handles to precisely tune the start and end of the fading edges.
Click Mesh View to hide the mesh for easier manipulation.
A Subdivision Character Line.x feature is added to the tree as a child of the subdivision surface.
