Computing the Weight of Family Items

You can compute the weight of family items automatically on the generated models or by declaring the weights by adding a dedicated column to the table associated with the component family. To know more about the computation of weight, see the Weight Analysis User's Guide.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: You must have created a component family with a table containing a Mass column.

Use the Report Weight Defined in Column Option

You can declare the weight of a generated model by adding a dedicated column to the design table associated with the component family.

  1. Click Manage Family Items Weight .
  2. In the Items Weight and Gravity Management dialog box, do the following:
    1. Select Report weight defined in column.
    2. Click OK.
    3. Select Share > Save > Save.
  3. Select the first row and click Test or Resolve Family Items .
  4. In theTest and Resolve Items dialog box, click Execute.
The Component Family Items Resolution dialog box appears.
  5. Click Close when done, right-click the first row and click Open to open the product.
    The product appears.
  6. Select the root product, and from the Compass, select Information Intelligence Apps , click B.I. Essentials and select Component Family Definition.
The declared weight is computed and displayed in the immersive view.

Use the Compute Weight and Report it to the Declared Weight Option

You can compute the weight of a family item and report the computed value to the declared weight. Using this option averts recomputing the weight and subsequent modification of the family item models when used in future products containing family item instances. The computed weight is systematically reported in the declared weight.

  1. Click Items Weight and Gravity Management , select the Compute weight and report it in Declared Weight option, and click OK.
  2. Select the second row and click Test or Resolve Items of the Family .
  3. In the Test and Resolve Items dialog box, click Execute.
The family is resolved and the icon turns green in the table.
  4. Click Close when done, right-click the second row and click Open to open the Product.
  5. Select the root product, and from the Compass, select Information Intelligence Apps , click B.I. Essentials and select Component Family Definition.
The computed weight is reported to the declared weight column.

Calculate Gravity and Inertia

You can calculate the center of gravity, inertia, or weight, or a combination of the three, for multiple geometries.

  1. Click Manage Family Items Weight in the action bar.
The Items Weight and Gravity Management box appears.
  2. Compute weight automatically by selecting between the following options:
    • No integration to calculate weight only.
    • Report gravity defined in column to declare the gravity and calculate inertia.
    • Compute gravity and report it to the declared gravity to compute the gravity and inertia.
  3. Click Test or Resolve items of the family to obtain the mass, gravity, and inertia of the item properties either when opening the item or by B.I. Essentials.
