Component Family Definition

A component family is an object that lets you generate and manage, in an easy and friendly manner, a set of physical parts or assemblies references, all derived from a generic parametric definition altered for each element using a table of values. The generation can be done on-demand, and the family elements are provided to the end user through a catalog app. This guide is intended for users who need to become quickly familiar with the component family.

The Component Family Definition app is used to:

  • Define and manage families of standard parts such as bolts, screws, balls, and bearings provided by third parties. It also makes them available to the community building products on top of them.

  • Define and manage the variability and standardization of home made components.

The Component Family Definition app supports design range management. When you create new content, you must specify the associated design range. Normal range is the default option and is sufficient in the majority of cases. For more information, see 3DEXPERIENCE Native Apps: Introducing Design Range Management.
