Services Item Lifecycle

Services Items are created and managed in the context of a Services Product and consist of any number of Configuration Features. Services Item are a specific type of Product Configuration used in services industries. Author users create Services Items and Contributor users manage Services Items.

If the Services Item is cancelled before being approved, it becomes governed by the Services Item Cancelled policy.

The Services Item lifecycle includes these states:

This page discusses:

Create

You must have the Services Product Manager or Services Product Developer license role to create Services Items. In the Create state, the Author creates the Services Item. Other access roles can view it, but not perform any tasks.

If the Services Item is under change control, the change order and change action control the promotion from one state to the next.

If you own the Services Item, you can add it to the composition of another Services Item. Only the owner can modify the Services Item in this state.

Draft

In the Draft state, the owner of the Services Item can perform any task, including adding services documents (as Reference Documents), markets (from the list of Candidate Markets defined for the parent product), and defining nested Services Items (Composition).

If you own the Services Item, you can add it to the composition of another Services Item.

To promote the Services Item to the Review state, it must meet these requirements:

  • Its parent product must be in the Review or Released state.
  • The cardinality rules of the parent Services Product for each nested Services Item must be met. Based on that value, it performs these checks:
    • If cardinality is one (or not set), only one Services Item for that product can be included in the Services Item composition
    • If cardinality is optional, there cannot be more than one Services Item for that product in the composition
    • If cardinality is mandatory, there must be at least one, and possible more, Services Item for that product in the composition
    • If cardinality is several, there can be any number and the promotion check never fails

Review

In the Review state, the composition is analyzed and any required approvals are obtained. If you own the Services Item, you can add it to the composition of another Services Item. The Services Item is frozen in this state.

To promote the Services Item to the Review state, it must meet these requirements:

  • The parent product must be in the Released state.
  • The cardinality rules must be met. The same checks are done as for the Services Item in the Draft state.

Release

In the Release state, you can add the Services Item to the composition of another Services Item. At this point, the only actions that can be taken for the Services Item are to promote it to Obsolete, move it to General Availability, or revise it.

The responsible Author can use Promote to GA to move the Services Item to General Availability. When done, the Services Item becomes governed by the Services Item GA policy.

Obsolete

Promoting the Services Item to the Obsolete state means that it is no longer sold. The only action that can be taken for the Services Item is to revise it.
