Inserting an Object

You can insert a Windows document into a 2D layout representation.

This command uses the Windows technology of Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). In a 2D Layout representation, an inserted document is an embedded object.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: Open a 2D layout representation.

Create New Object

You can create new object.

  1. From the Annotation section of the action bar, click Insert Object .
  2. In the Insert Object dialog box, under Object Type list, select the Paintbrush Picture format.
  3. Click OK.
    A Paint window is automatically displayed and this software is associated with the Bitmap Image format.

  4. Create the image.
  5. In the top bar, select Share > Save > Save with Options to propagate your modifications into the 2D layout representation.
    Tip: You can also close the Paint window (no save is needed).

    Back to the 2D layout representation window, your image is inserted at the view origin.



  6. Optional: Move or resize the inserted object using the handles.

    Note: It is not possible to rotate an inserted object.

  7. Back to Paint, modify your picture if needed, and then close the app (no save is needed to close Paint).

Create an Object from a File

You can create an object from a file in the Insert Object dialog box.

  1. Click Insert Object .
  2. In the Insert Object dialog box, select Create from File.
  3. Click Browse and then select the document from file tree system.
    Important: It is impossible to select an object from the PLM database.
  4. Select the Display As Icon check box.
  5. Click OK to close the dialog box.
    The object is inserted and displayed as an icon at the view origin.
  6. Optional: Move or resize the object using the handles.

Cut/Copy/Paste from a Windows App

You can use the cut/copy/paste commands of Windows app to move or copy the elements in the layouts.

  1. Open a Windows document, an Excel sheet for example.
  2. Right-click a cell's selection.
  3. From the context menu, select Copy.
  4. Back in the 2D layout representation, right-click a sheet or view.
  5. From the context menu, select Paste (or Paste Special)..
    The object is inserted at the view origin.
  6. Optional: Move or resize the object using the handles.

Modify an Inserted Object

You can modify the inserted objects.

  1. Double-click the object to open it.
    Its associated Windows app is automatically launched.
  2. Modify your document, and then close the Windows app.
    The inserted objected is updated.
