About Abstraction Shapes

Abstraction shapes allow you to modify geometry when you cannot or do not want to edit the original parts.

There are several cases where you may not have access to the original geometry:

  • You have a Contributor role that does not support editing.
  • The model status prevents editing (Frozen, Released).
  • The geometry data is in a part that is represented but not included with the assembly.

The abstraction shape is a container into which you can copy the original geometry to allow complete editing without impacting the source content. You can remove model details that are not required for simulation, add simulation geometry (such as midsurfaces for shell models), or perform any other geometry editing tasks. For more information, see Simulation Model Preparation: Target Shapes.
