Defining Connection Friction

You can define damage behavior as part of a connection definition.

You can define multiple behavior definitions. For example, you can define individual behaviors for the different components of relative motion.

Before you begin:
  • Create a new connection or edit an existing connection. To create a connection, see Defining Connectors.
  • In the connection dialog box, click to open the Behaviors editor.

  1. In the left pane of the Behaviors editor, click next to Friction and then click on the new Friction definition.
The Friction behavior editor appears on the right pane of the Behaviors editor.
  2. From the Friction Model options, choose one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Predefined Allows you to model typical frictional mechanisms in commonly used connector types without defining the mechanics of the frictional response.

For more information, see Predefined Friction Behavior.

User-Defined Allows you to define friction behavior if predefined friction is not available for the connection type of interest or if the predefined friction interaction does not describe the mechanism being analyzed adequately.

For more information, see User-Defined Friction Behavior.

  3. If you are specifying the User-Defined friction model, from the Slip direction options, choose one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Specify direction Allows you to specify the available component of relative motion along which friction forces or moments act. You can define multiple friction behaviors to model friction for more than one component, but you can have only one friction behavior for each component.
Compute using force potential Computes the instantaneous slip direction using a force potential. Select the Force Potential tabbed page, and define at least one force potential term.
  4. From the Stick stiffness options, choose one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Use default The app computes an appropriate stick stiffness.
Specify Allows to you specify the stick stiffness associated with frictional behavior in the direction specified by the slip direction.
  5. Configure the Tangential Behavior. For more information, see Connector Friction Behavior.
  6. Configure the Contact Force. For more information, see Specifying the Internal Contact Force.
