Defining MEPs as Substitutes

You can define a MEP as a substitute part, add the substitute to multiple parent parts, or remove its substitute definition.

This task shows you how to:


Before you begin: A MEP must be added as an alternate part before it can be redefined as a substitute part.

Defining Alternate Parts as Substitute Parts

After a MEP has been added as an alternate, you can redefine it as a substitute part in the context of one or more parent EBOM parts. Afterward, an MCO is generated and the MBOM is updated.

  1. Search for and open the child part.
  2. Click Equivalents in the main menu.
  3. Click the Modify Usage icon in the Actions column.
    A confirmation window appears, indicating that the alternate definition will be removed and the part will be added as a substitute.
  4. Click OK in the confirmation window.
    A new window listing the associated parent parts opens.
  5. Select one or more parent parts and click Submit.

The MEP is defined as a substitute part.

Adding Substitute Definition to Additional Parents

You can define a MEP as a substitute part for one or more parent parts.

  1. Search for and open the child part.
  2. Click Equivalents in the main menu.
  3. Click the Add Substitute icon in the Actions column.
    A new window listing the associated parent parts opens.
  4. Select one or more parent parts and click Done.

Removing Substitute Definition

When you remove the MEP substitute definition, the substitute part reverts back to an alternate part. Afterward, an MCO is generated and the MBOM is updated.

  1. Search for and open the child part.
  2. Click Equivalents in the main menu.
  3. Click the Remove Substitute icon in the Actions column.
    The Structure View window appears.
  4. In the Structure View window, select one or more parts.
  5. Click Submit.
    The MEP is defined as an alternate part.
