Creating Remove Face Features

You can simplify a 3D shape by removing some of its faces, for example when parts are far too complex for a finite element analysis.

The Remove Face command is visible only if you have installed the Part Design app.

Remove a Face

You can completely remove a face.

  1. From the Refine Defeature section of the action bar, click Remove Face .
  2. Select the faces in the Faces to remove box. You can select the following options by clicking the box:
    OptionDescription
    Clear Selection Removes all selected faces.
    Tangency Propagation Selects all faces tangential to the selected faces.
    Fillet Propagation Selects the continuous filleted surfaces.
    Tips:
    • You can also select the faces to remove first and then select Remove Face in the context toolbar.
    • To manage the selected faces to be removed, click the > arrow in the Faces to remove box.
  3. Select the faces in the Faces to keep box.

    Tip: To manage the selected faces to be removed, click the > arrow in the Faces to keep box.

  4. Click to preview all faces adjacent to the face to remove.
    The faces to remove and the faces to keep must belong to the same body.
  5. Click OK.

    • If the Remove Face feature fails at the time of creation, the error faces get highlighted and labeled, and the Feature Definition Error dialog box appears. In this case, do one of the following:
      • Edit the feature to provide valid inputs.
      • Click on the labels of the error-causing faces to remove them from the Faces to remove box.
      • Deactivate the feature.
    • If the operation takes longer than five seconds to complete, the Update in Progress dialog box appears. In this case, do one of the following:
      • Wait for the operation to complete.
      • Click Cancel to interrupt the operation.
        Note: You can change inputs in the Remove Face.x dialog box, to restart the remove face operation.

    All faces are removed. The RemoveFace.XXX node is added to the tree.

Remove Faces Using Limiting Elements

You can partially remove faces using limiting elements, for example to locally modify a fillet.

  1. Click Remove Face .
  2. Select the face to remove in the Faces to remove box.
    Tip: Right-click the box and select Fillet Propagation to get the tangent continuous filleted faces of the selected face.
  3. Select a limiting element.
    The limiting face is detected automatically and is added to the table.
    Notes:
    • When a limiting element intersects multiple faces, the intersected faces are shown in red color. You can select any one of these faces from the 3D area according to the requirement.
    • The arrow in the 3D area indicates the side of the face to be removed. To reverse the direction of the arrow click for the corresponding face in the table.
    • The limiting face cannot be a removed face. Click to see the removed faces.
  4. Click OK.
    The face is partially removed up to the limiting elements in the defined direction. The RemoveFace.XXX node is added to the tree.
