Creating a User Feature

You can create a user feature which is a template that works at the 3D shape representation level. From a collection of features (geometry, literal features, formulas, constraints...), you can create your own feature. The result is a feature that can be reused in the design of another 3D shape representation.

Before you begin:
  • To access the models used in this topic, import the Bounding_Box_Reference_000.3dxml and the Bounding_Box_Destination_000.3dxml files located in win_b64\startup\Knowledgeware\3D Templates Samples\Sample1.

  1. Open the reference product.
  2. From the Compass, click 3D Modeling Apps and select 3D Templates Capture.
  3. From the Manage Templates section, click User Feature .
  4. Replace the default user feature name by a new name, Bounding Sphere in this example, and select the inputs of the user feature in the tree. In this example, select:
    1. Axis System.1.
    2. Construction Sphere.

    • Datum features that cannot be calculated cannot be inputs of user features.
    • Sub-elements cannot be components of user features. For example, the face of a pad can be an input.

  5. Click the Parameters tab, select Construction\Output\Bounding Sphere\Radius, click Published Name and enter Radius in the Published Name box.
  6. Save your file in database.
    The user feature is created.

Notes:
  • When creating the user feature, you can add a link between the user feature instance and its references. By default, this option is enabled. If you want to disable it definitively, select the Properties tab in the User Feature Definition dialog box and unselect Set Reference/Instance link in the Instantiation box.
  • The link between the user feature instance and its reference can be seen using Edit > Links&Relations or the Impact Graph. When working with a user feature instance, the context menu enables you to open the user feature reference.
  • All published parameters of User Features can be exported into data review if the Export published parameters of user features setting is selected, which is also visible in the 3D Annotation Insight dashboard app.
