Creating or Copying a Project Template

You can create or copy a template that covers a certain project type and includes pertinent information about deliverables, bookmarks, and tasks.

Required access roles:

  • Baseline: Leader
  • App-specific: Project Administrator

If a project template needs to be available across collaborative spaces in a company, you need to create it in a public collaborative space. If a project template needs to be restricted to a certain collaborative space for security reasons, you can create it in a private collaborative space. If needed, you can add co-owners from other collaborative spaces to give them access.

When you copy a project template, all components of the source template are copied to the new template, including bookmark URLs, bookmarks, questions, checklists, and tasks.

  1. From the top bar, click Add > Project > Create Project Template.

    Or:

    1. From the Compass, click Project Management .
    2. On the left side, click Project > Project Templates. On the Project Templates page, click Create New Project Template from the page toolbar.

    Or:

    1. From the Compass, click Project Management .
    2. On the left side, click Project > Project Templates. On the Project Templates page, select a template.
    3. Click Copy from the page toolbar.
  2. Enter or edit the details for the project template.

Type. If a project template has subtypes, you can choose the type. If the template does not have a subtype defined, the chooser button does not appear.

Name. Enter the name of the project template.

Note: The Collaborative Space is shown in which the project template is created.

Policy. Select a policy for the template from the list.

Description. Enter a brief description of the project template. You may want to include the kinds of projects the template is intended for and state pertinent information about the deliverables, bookmarks, and tasks.

Schedule From. Whether the project using the template is to be scheduled from the Project Start Date or the Project Finish Date. Based on this selected value, a template's tasks have a "Constraint Type" as, respectively, "As Soon As Possible" or "As Late As Possible."

Base Currency. The currency in which financial data is stored. The base currency applies to budgets, benefits, resource requests, and forecasts. The base currency is set at project creation time and cannot be changed after creation.

On premises only: The base currency is set in the emxCommon.Currency.Triangulation property in the emxSystem.properties file.

  3. Click OK.

The system creates the template in the Active state. To complete the template, you can add:

    • Bookmark URLs: adding, editing, and deleting bookmark URLs for a project template is the same as for a project. See About Favorites.
    • Bookmarks and content: adding, editing, and deleting bookmarks and content for a project template is the same as for a project. See Bookmarks Page.
Note: Only Document Type objects can be added to a project template bookmark. The reason is that there is no way to anticipate whether users working on the project have access to create any other deliverable types. For example, even the creator of the project may not have rights to create a part. A Document Type object in any state will be visible to the user who has access to the project template.
    • Schedule: except for the association with questions, adding, editing, and deleting tasks for a project template is the same as for a project. See About the Task Schedule.
    • Questions: see Questions Page.
