Creating a Material from an AxF File

You can create a material from an Appearance Exchange Format (AxF) file. An AxF file is a container format for material appearance (parameterized materials).

The AxF file format is the property of X-Rite Inc.

This task shows you how to:

From the Action Bar

You can create a material from an AxF file directly from the action bar.

  1. In the Selected AxF Files area, click , and then browse your filetree to select the appropriate AxF file (.axf extension).
  2. In the Material Setup Information area, indicate the new material name in the Material Title box, or leave the default.
  3. In the Material Family, enter a new family name or leave the default.
  4. In the Material Type, select either Core, or Covering.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the tree or work area, select the object onto which you want to apply the material.
  7. Use the context toolbar to select the structure level and the application mode.
  8. Click to apply the material.

From the Appearance Domain Dialog Box

You can create a material from an AxF file directly from the Appearance Domain dialog box.

  1. Expand or collapse the different areas contained in the editor.

    Area Description
    Preview Displays a preview of the material using a predefined shape, a default UV mapping, and a default black ambience.
    Appearance Parameters Contains a series of tabs that group parameters in a logical way.
    Substance Parameters Dedicated to material with Adobe substances.
    Reference Mapping Parameters Contains the mapping parameters for the material reference (that is, the material appearance).
    Material application mapping Contains the mapping parameters for the applied material.

  2. On the right side of the dialog box, click .
  3. In the Selected AxF Files area, click , and then browse your filetree to select the appropriate AxF file (.axf extension).
  4. Click OK.
