Managing Navigation between Parent/Children Levels

In a diagram view, you can choose to display the parent component or children components connected to them for function or logical models. The routes are reconnected when possible.

Note: The navigation through the different levels of a model is only possible with 2D representation boxes.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: For the purpose of this scenario:
  • Create two parent components (LogicalParent1 and LogicalParent2).
  • In the first parent component (LogicalParent1), create two children components (LogicalChildren1 and LogicalChildren2).
  • In the second parent component (LogicalParent2), create a child component (LogicalChildren3).
  • Connect LogicalChildren1 to LogicalChildren3.
  • Connect LogicalChildren2 to LogicalParent2.
  • Generate a diagram view containing the component parents and their children. For more information, see Generating Diagram Views from a Model.

Navigate From Parent to Children Level

  1. Select the first parent component LogicalParent1.
  2. From the Diagram section of the action bar, click Go Down .
    The selected component is removed from the diagram view and replaced by its children.

  3. Select the second parent component LogicalParent2.
  4. Click Go Down .
    The route connecting LogicalParent2 to LogicalChildren2 is highlighted in red. The Command Impact panel appears to warn you that the highlighted route is about to be deleted.

  5. Select one of the following options:
    1. OK: The highlighted route is deleted and the selected component is replaced by its child.
    2. Cancel: The command is stopped and the route is not deleted.

Navigate From Children to Parent Level

Before you begin: For the purpose of this scenario:
  • Select the first parent component (System1).
  • Click Go Down .


  1. Select one of the children component (LogicalChildren2) or (LogicalChildren1).
  2. Click Go Up .
  3. In the Symbol Selection dialog box, clear the children components you do not want to replace.
    The routes impacted by the selection are highlighted in orange.

  4. Click OK to validate the selection.
    The selected components are removed from the diagram view and replaced by their parent.
