Demoting a Defect Action

When necessary, you can demote a defect action from one state to an earlier state in its lifecycle. For example, if the Quality Assignee determines that the fix does not resolve the defect, that person can demote the defect action from Test to Open.

Note: If you demote a defect action from Closed to Open and the defect action had dependent defect actions, you are notified that you need to check those dependencies to determine if any of the dependent defect actions also need to be re-opened.

Required access roles:

  • App-specific: Defect Engineer
  • Baseline: Author (cannot promote or demote to the Open state) or Leader (can promote or demote to any state)

Before you begin: View the Properties page for the defect action.
  1. On the toolbar, select one of these actions:
    • Click To Open to demote the defect to the "Open" state. This action is only available in the "Test" or "Closed" states.
    • Click To Test to demote the defect to the "Test" state. This action is only available in the "Closed" state.
    • Click To Evaluate to demote the defect to the "Evaluate" state. This action is available in the "Open", "Test", "Closed", and "Rejected" states.
The To Evaluate or To Submit panel opens.
  2. Enter the reason why you are demoting the defect action in the Reason for Demotion text box.
  3. Click Done.

The defect action is demoted to the selected lifecycle state. All people and member lists subscribed to the defect action are notified. The defect action shows the explanation entered in the Reason for Demotion field on the Properties page. If it is subsequently promoted, that field is removed from the Properties page.
