About Development Areas

A development area is the user’s workspace where they invoke tools configured to specifically run against a development’s design data. The methodology of the tools run by the user is defined by the development settings.

You cannot use the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to create, edit, or delete development areas. You must use the DesignSync Development Area Management Tool (sda command).

If the development instance was created using the DesignSync web user interface instead of using Defect Management and Collaboration, then no development area is created in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for use by Defect Management and Collaboration. The information in this guide only applies to development areas associated with development instances created in Defect Management and Collaboration.

For a development instance created using Defect Management and Collaboration, the sda command creates the development area in Synchronicity ProjectSync, and an object in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to display details about that development area. If the development area cannot be created in 3DEXPERIENCE platform, then the development area is not created in Synchronicity ProjectSync and a message explaining why it could not be created is provided.

If a user requests to join a development area in Synchronicity ProjectSync, that information is reflected in the development area shown in Defect Management and Collaboration. When a development area is deleted, the system checks if this person is the only one using the development area. If so, then the development area is deleted. If not, then the person is removed as a user from the development area.
