Editing the Configuration Context

You can edit a configuration context for one or more configurable objects. Users who have the Configuration Engineer license can define variability and evolution effectivity for the configurable objects using the configuration context. You can then filter the structure using the configuration context.

This task shows you how to:


Before you begin: Ensure that you have already done the following:
  • Expanded the structure so that you can see the configurable objects whose configuration context you want to edit.
  • Selected one or more configurable objects in the structure for which you want to edit the configuration context.
  • Clicked Edit Configuration Context. The location of this action varies based on the app that you are using.

Add a Configuration Context

Users who have the Configuration Engineer license can add a model to define the configuration context for one or more configurable objects in the structure.

  1. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Add Context.
  2. Enter the model's Name or its Marketing Name in the search field.
    After you entered 3 or more characters of a model's Name or its Marketing Name in the search field, the model list progressively filters based on the characters. You can select a model from the list. All models that can be used as a configuration context are listed. Those that are already added are grayed out and cannot be selected. If you have entered 1 or 2 characters and press ENTER, the 3DSearch results dialog box opens. All models that contain the character string, but that are not already selected, are listed.
  3. From the list or search results, select one or more models to define as the configuration contexts for the selected objects, then click OK.
  4. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Close.

The selected configurable objects now have the selected models as their configuration context.

Edit a Configuration Context

Users who have the Configuration Engineer license can edit the configuration context for one or more configurable objects in the structure.

  1. Click Edit Criteria to add configuration criteria to the object.
  2. Deselect the check box for any existing configuration criteria that you want to remove from the object.
  3. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Close.

Propagate a Configuration Context

In some apps, users with the Author role can select a configurable object with a configuration context and others without one. They can then propagate the configuration context from the configurable object that has one to the others that do not have one.

  1. Select one or more configurable objects in the structure to which you want to propagate the configuration context.
  2. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Propagate to all selected objects in the tile status bar for the model that you want to propagate to the other configurable objects.
  3. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Close.

The selected configurable objects now have the same configuration context.

Select the Effectivity Criteria for a Configuration Context

Users with the Configuration Engineer license can select which types of effectivity criteria are used in the configuration context.

  1. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Edit Criteria.
  2. Select the check box for each type of effectivity that you want to use for the configuration context.
  3. Deselect the check box for each type of effectivity that you do not want to use for the configuration context.
  4. For check boxes that display , indicating that some of the selected configurable objects have this type of effectivity in their configuration context while others do not, do one of the following:
    • To use this type effectivity in the configuration contexts of all selected configurable objects, select the check box.
    • To retain mixed use of this type effectivity in the configuration contexts of all selected configurable objects, do not do anything to the check box.
    • To remove this type effectivity from the configuration contexts of all selected configurable objects, select the check box, then clear it.
  5. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, click Close.

The selected types of effectivity are now used in the configuration context.

Remove a Configuration Context

Users with a license for Configuration Engineer can remove one or models from the configuration context for a configurable object.

  1. In the Edit Configuration Context dialog box, select one or more models that you want to remove from the configuration context.
  2. Select Remove Context.
  3. Click Close.

The selected models are removed from the configuration context.
