About Sliding Velocities

A sliding velocity prescribes either a translational velocity along an axis or a rotational velocity about an axis. Sliding velocities are used to define relative motion in areas where sliding friction is analyzed, such as between the rotating disc and fixed pads in a disc brake assembly (rotational) or between a tire and road surface (translational).

Sliding velocities allow you to analyze steady-state frictional sliding within a static procedure. Typically, one or more steps precede the static step where friction is analyzed. For example, there might be steps that start the relative motion of the components, then move the components into contact to establish the friction interaction.

To ensure a smooth transition between the required steps, you should set the friction coefficient to zero for all steps prior to the one where you introduce the sliding velocity. At this point, you can adjust the friction for the steady-state static procedure to the desired value.
