Installation and System Configuration Considerations

The 3DOrchestrate Distribution Server is a Java EE application that has many installation and configuration options. You should review these options and think ahead to plan your server and network configuration.

Before starting the 3DOrchestrate Distribution Server installer and the Java EE deployment utility, be sure the following conditions are met:

On Windows
  • You must be logged in with a user account that is a member of the Administrators group on this computer. Log-in through a Remote Desktop session is acceptable.

Note: If User Account Control (UAC) is disabled and the Windows Firewall is turned off, the UAC prompts will not occur and the right-click Run as administrator option is not required.
On Linux
  • You must be logged in to the machine as a non-root user, directly to the console or remotely via SSH.
  • You must have the root password to run su or be able to execute commands such as mkdir and chown via the sudo command. The installer only uses root privileges to create a subdirectory under /usr or /opt that is writable by a non-root user and to set the permissions on one small program to set-user-id root (for a run-as station).
  • You must be on the console of the machine or in a remote X-Windows session and be able to start the Linux file browser and other windowing programs. It is possible to install the 3DOrchestrate Distribution Server without X-Windows, but you must use the command-line versions of the installer and deployment utility.
  • If you want to install under the default location /usr/DassaultSystemes/, create the installation directory as root and assign ownership of the directory to the non-root user that will perform the installation. This is necessary because /usr/DassaultSystemes/ can be written only by root.
