Symmetry

A symmetry flow condition serves as one boundary for a fluid domain and enables you to perform an analysis for a subset of the overall fluid cavity.

You can define symmetry in your analysis in cases where the model geometry is symmetric and the expected flow and thermal behavior have mirror symmetry. The app calculates results for the subset of the fluid domain on one side of the symmetry plane or planes, and then mirrors those results to illustrate the behavior for the entire fluid domain. This approach can reduce analysis time for symmetrical fluid flow.

Examples

You can define symmetry on a bounding plane or on any surface in your model. The analysis treats the symmetry flow condition as a zero-shear slip wall in a viscous flow, and the symmetry enforces zero normal velocity across the symmetry plane and zero normal gradient across the plane for all output variables.
