Brittle Failure Options

The brittle failure criterion enables you to specify when individual points in a model fail. If all the material points in an element fail, the element is removed from the mesh. You must use brittle failure with the brittle cracking and brittle shear material behaviors.

Input Data Description
Failure criterion Method for specifying when a point has failed.
  • Uniaxial: Indicates that an element is removed when any local direct cracking strain (or displacement) component reaches the failure value.
  • Biaxial: Indicates that an element is removed when any two direct cracking strain (or displacement) components reach the failure value.
  • Triaxial: Indicate that an element is removed when all three possible direct cracking strain (or displacement) components reach the failure value.
Use temperature-dependent data Specifies material parameters that depend on temperature. A Temperature field appears in the data table. For more information, see Specifying Material Data as a Function of Temperature and Independent Field Variables.
Number of field variables Specify material parameters that depend on field variables. Field columns appear in the data table for each field variable you add. For more information, see Specifying Material Data as a Function of Temperature and Independent Field Variables.
Direct cracking failure strain Direct cracking failure strain, ( e n n c k ) f .
Direct cracking failure displacement Direct cracking failure displacement, ( u n c k ) f .
