Porous Media Swelling

A moisture swelling material model defines the saturation-driven volumetric swelling of the solid skeleton of a porous medium in partially saturated flow conditions.

This page discusses:

The moisture swelling material model can be either isotropic or anisotropic. You can use moisture swelling in the analysis of coupled wetting liquid flow and porous medium stress.

Isotropic

You specify the volumetric swelling data:

Input Data Description
Swelling strain Volumetric moisture swelling strain, ϵ m s .
Saturation Saturation, s . This value must be in the range 0.0 s 1.0 .

Anisotropic

You specify the volumetric swelling data and the anisotropic swelling ratios:

Table 1. Volumetric Swelling Data
Input Data Description
Swelling strain Volumetric moisture swelling strain, ϵ m s .
Saturation Saturation, s . This value must be in the range 0.0 s 1.0 .
Table 2. Anisotropic Swelling Ratios
Input Data Description
r11 Anisotropic swelling ratio, r 11 .
r22 Anisotropic swelling ratio, r 22 .
r33 Anisotropic swelling ratio, r 33 .
