Defining Weld Defaults

You can define the default settings for most weld fatigue parameters that appear in the Weld Fillet Set and Weld Line Set dialog boxes.

Before you begin: You can define weld default settings only when you have the appropriate role.

About Weld Defaults
  1. From the Procedures section of the action bar, click Weld Defaults .
  2. From the Structural stress type options, select one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Normal Structural stress normal to the weld lines.
Shear Structural stress parallel to the weld lines.
Worst of normal/shear Worse fatigue life computed from the normal and shear structural stress histories.
Multiaxial Advanced multiaxial weld fatigue: Wang & Brown-based multiaxial cycle counter with blending of normal and shear S-N master curves
  3. From the Structural stress source options, select one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Basic nodal force Standard Battelle structural stress method. This method requires the creation of very highly structured meshes on the crack surfaces.
Enhanced nodal force Enhanced nodal force structural stress method. This method requires accurate modeling of the crack surfaces but the mesh over that surface can be unstructured.
  4. From the l(r) function options, select one of the following:
    OptionDescription
Displacement control "Structural Joints / Displacement Control" method for defining the function of the bending ratio, r .
Load control "Small Details / Load Control" method for defining the function of the bending ratio, r .
  5. From the Mean stress correction options, specify one of the following models to describe the default mean stress correction method for weld fillet sets and weld line sets:
    OptionDescription
    None No mean stress correction.
User file Performs mean stress correction based on user-specified data in a file in the database.

The material used for the welds must have ultimate tensile strength defined.

    ASME Tensile ASME Tensile method.

The material used for the welds must have monotonic yield stress defined.

Modified Goodman (compressive only) Modified Goodman method, suitable for brittle materials and welds.

The material used for the welds must have ultimate tensile strength defined.

Battelle - Low Residual Battelle - Low Residual method
Battelle - Compressive Residual Battelle - Compressive Residual method
  6. Set Toe failures to On to analyze toe failure modes.
  7. Set Throat failures to On to analyze throat failure modes.
  8. From the Throat failure sense options, specify how you want the app to analyze throat failures:
    OptionDescription
From root or surface Analyzes throat failures from the root to the surface line and vice versa.
From root Analyzes throat failures from the root to the surface line only.
From surface Analyzes throat failures from the surface line to the root only.
  9. Set Fusion failures to On to analyze fusion failure modes.
  10. From the Fusion failure sense options, specify how you want the app to analyze fusion failures:
    OptionDescription
From root or surface Analyzes fusion failures from the root to the surface line and vice versa.
From root Analyzes fusion failures from the root to the surface line only.
From surface Analyzes fusion failures from the surface line to the root only.
  11. Set Root failures to On to detect root-through-plate failure modes automatically.
  12. Specify the Number of smoothing iterations you want to perform smoothing on the stress with respect to distance along the weld lines.

By default, the app performs no smoothing iterations, but you can specify up to 10.

  13. Specify the Weld line split angle, which determines how long weld lines with kinks in them are split into separate segments.
  14. Specify the Failure plane tolerance, a tolerance in degrees for the angle between the assumed failure plane normal and that of a candidate element face.
  15. Specify the Blunt root threshold, which controls the handling of the weld root lines where there is a small gap in the model between the base plate and the back of the weld line set.
  16. For advanced multiaxial weld fatigue, set Shear to normal nonlinear mapping to On to apply shear-to-normal nonlinear mapping for multiaxial weld failure simulations.
  17. For advanced multiaxial weld fatigue, specify the Normal-shear covariance threshold, a proportionality threshold that relates to the covariance between the normal and shear stress over the history.
  18. For advanced multiaxial weld fatigue, select either of the following from the Modified Wang and Brown list:
    OptionDescription
On Uses the modified Wang and Brown criterion to start the reversal scan.
Off Uses the classical Wang and Brown criterion to start the reversal scan.
  19. Click OK.
