About Referenced Content

Referenced content allows multiple objects to refer to the same item.

Referenced content in a simulation process or simulation activity, such as a folder or document, refers to objects elsewhere in the database. Referenced content can be thought of as a link to the original object. For example, you can create referenced content in a simulation process that refers to a simulation folder or document in a different simulation process or simulation activity.

Referenced content can refer to the following:

  • Process Composer for Dashboard objects, such as documents and simulation folders
  • ENOVIA business objects

For example, you can create a document in a simulation process that defines the properties of your materials. You can share the document across unrelated simulation activities by creating referenced content in each simulation activity that refers to the original document. Similarly, if you copy one of the simulation activites, the new activity continues to refer to the original document. Process Composer for Dashboard allows you to share content between simulation activities by referring to a folder or a document under the parent simulation process; however, the reverse is not true. You cannot refer to a folder or a document under a simulation activity from its parent simulation process.

Note: You should use object parameters if your simulation process will run in parallel because multiple activities may try to access referenced content simultaneously.

You can create a download rule in a simulation activity that copies a referenced document or folder to the working directory. Similarly, you can create an upload rule in a simulation activity that copies a referenced document or folder from the working directory into a simulation activity.

You can create referenced content from a simulation folder or a data category.

  • A simulation folder and a data category can refer to documents and to objects, such as products, simulations, and representations. Your Simulation Host Administrator determines the type of objects that are available to you.
  • A data category can refer to requirements, test cases, and use cases.

Note:

You cannot create referenced content from a bookmark folder. A bookmark folder can contain only owned objects.
