About Contact Detection

Contact detection identifies surfaces in the model that are likely to touch one another and creates surface-based contact features for them.

Contact detection provides a convenient method for quickly creating multiple surface-based contact features based on the initial configuration of the model.

To create realistic bonds or sliding contact, it is required that the two surfaces meet certain proximity and orientation requirements. These requirements prevent the creation of bonds and contact features that could lead to unrealistic or problematic simulations.

Consider the following points when using the contact detection tool or directly creating surface-based contact pairs (either sliding or bonded):

  • The two surfaces must be very close to each other.
  • The two surfaces must be roughly facing each other.
  • Display options may affect the distance between surfaces.

The simulation app determines a reasonable distance for the maximum separation between surfaces that are considered to be in contact based on the size of the model components.
