Explore the Results

Explore the results of your DOE-driven simulation process in the Performance Study and Results Analytics dashboard apps.

This task shows you how to:

Review the Results

Review the results of the simulation in Performance Study.

Performance Study is a lightweight dashboard app that allows you to edit the input and output parameters of a simulation process along with limits on those parameters. You can also use Performance Study to execute the simulation process and to monitor the value of the parameters while the job is running.

In a real scenario, a simulation expert from within your company will create the physics simulation, the simulation process, and the driving parameters. Less experienced users can then use Performance Study to modify only the input parameters and rerun the simulation, without having full access to the physics simulation.

  1. Right-click the completed job in the tree, and select Open in Performance Study.
Performance Study opens in a browser window with the DOE Simulation process selected.
  2. Select the Inputs/Outputs tab, and review the input and output parameters for the last run.
  3. Select the Parameters tab, and review the parameter values for each run.

Search for the Optimal Design

Use Results Analytics to determine the best design.

Results Analytics is a dashboard app that provides tools to help you select the best design by trading off competing objectives. You can answer questions, such as "What if?" or "What is my best option?", while retaining knowledge, decision history, and reference material in a single location. In this simple example of a loaded cantilever beam the designer might be forced to choose between the lightest beam or the strongest beam. Which objective is more important for your application? Or is the best design a compromise between weight and strength?

Results Analytics is divided into a sequence of logical steps that allow you to examine and analyze your data, to rank alternatives, and to assemble a subset of possible alternatives by moving selected data points to a separate area—the basket. Finally, you review the alternatives in the basket and recommend the best design.

  1. From Performance Study, click Analyze Results.
Results Analytics opens in a new browser window.
  2. Select Guided Analytics to analyze the data set.
Results Analytics starts the analytics case on your local 3DOrchestrate Station. When the analysis is complete, the window shows a preview of your data set. The simulation process and history data, including images files, are available for review.
  3. Change the magnification under Data Sources to view the entire process.
  4. From the workflow steps at the bottom of the window, click Define.
  5. Select Minimize for the objective of Mass_MeasureInertia_1.
  6. From the steps at the bottom of the window, click Explore, and review the results.
The runs are ranked by weight, with the lightest beam ranked as the best design.
  7. Return to Define.
  8. Enter an upper threshold for Maximum_Max_Displacement that is slightly lower than the largest value from the four runs.

Note: The lowest and highest values for each parameter are shown in square brackets in the right column, as shown below:

  9. Return to Explore.
The result with a displacement greater than the upper threshold is now highlighted in red indicating that it is infeasible. You can choose to show/hide infeasible results by activating/deactivating the Infeasible option.
  10. Right-click on the first column, and select Add to Basket for the two highest ranked alternatives that are considered feasible.
  11. From the steps at the bottom of the window, click Compare.
Results Analytics compares the two alternatives in the basket.
  12. View the figures in more detail by clicking the triangle next to them. Close the figures after you view them.
  13. Choose the alternative with the lowest maximum displacement, and click Recommend

    .
The icon turns blue to indicate this is the recommended alternative.
  14. From the steps at the bottom of the window, click Recommend.
Results Analytics shows the recommended alternative.
  15. Click to save your analytics case.

Congratulations, you have successfully completed this example!
