Assign Materials

Create the fluid and the solid sections for the CPU enclosure, the heat source, and the chip and apply corresponding materials.

You create a fluid section to define the material properties and behaviors of the fluid domain in a flow simulation. You create a solid section to apply properties to a region where the material is continuous through the thickness of the part.

In this example, you first specify air as the material for the fluid section. This represents the air flow from the fan through the CPU Board. Next, you create solid sections for the heat sink and chip to represent them as solid mechanical features in the model. You use aluminum as the material for the heat sink and silicon as the material for the chip.

This task shows you how to:

Create the Fluid Section

Use a fluid section to define the material properties and behaviors of the fluid domain in the flow simulation.

  1. From the Properties section of the action bar, click Fluid Section .
  2. Select the glyph as the support for the fluid section.
    The fluid region is highlighted.
  3. Specify air as the material for the fluid section by doing the following:
    1. From the material options, click .
    2. From the Material Palette, search for MynameExample-Air.
The Myname prefix is the duplication string you specified during Create the Fluid Simulation.
    3. Select MynameExample-Air, and click OK.
The app assigns air to the fluid section and closes the Material Palette.
  4. Click OK.

Create Solid Sections for the Heat Sink and Chip

Use a solid section to apply properties to a region where the material is continuous through the thickness of the part.

  1. From the Properties section of the action bar, click Solid Section .
  2. Accept the default name, Solid Section.1.
  3. From the tree, select the heat sink as the support for Solid Section.1.

Tip: Press F3 to display the tree if it is not visible, and click Example-HeatSink from the Model section of the tree.

    The heat sink is highlighted.
  4. Specify aluminum the material for the heat sink by doing the following:
    1. From the material options, click .
    2. From the Material Palette, search for MynameExample-Aluminum.
    3. Select MynameExample-Aluminum, and click OK.
The app assigns aluminum to the solid section and closes the Material Palette.
  5. Click OK to create the first solid section.
  6. Similarly, create a solid section for the chip, and assign it the material Myname-Example-Silicon.
