Context: When you search the database, you are using the Connector for SOLIDWORKS search tool. The Windows Explorer Search does not work inside of Connector for SOLIDWORKS.

Note: If you mistakenly use the Windows Explorer Search, close the Windows Explorer Search and retype your search in the Connector for SOLIDWORKS search tool.

  1. To begin a search, select the Search tab.

Note: You can also open the Search tab by pressing Ctrl + F.

The Search tab includes the Search menu and the Search card.
  2. On the left-side of the search tab, click Commands and select the type of objects (files, folders, and workspaces) to include in the search results.

You can select number of rows that can be displayed in one page of search results.

  3. To refine or broaden the search, use the check boxes as follows:
    1. To search for files that contain exact letters as entered in the search, select the Case Sensitive check box.
    2. To search for matching file objects including both attached and unattached files, select the Search global objects check box.

Clearing the check box, eliminates the unattached files from your results.

    3. To search the entire server and your local directory, select the Search all workspaces check box.
    4. To search the entire workspace where you are doing the search, select Search entire workspace.
    5. To search the subfolders of the folders where you are doing the search, select Search subfolders.
    6. To search all iterations and revisions of the files, select the Search in all iterations check box.

When you clear the check box, you limit the search to only the latest iterations and revisions of the file. While it eliminates instances, it still locates versions.

    7. To include family and instances of the files, select the Search configurations check box.

To limit the search to only family type objects of the files, clear the check box.

Tip: Clear the Search configurations check box when you select a row option from Commands. The system then limits the search to only families without the instances and returns results that are closer to your row selection.

  4. Enter search criteria in the search card fields.

To clear criteria you have entered, click Clear (Search toolbar).

  5. To filter the search, choose from the following:
    OptionDescription
    * To find all files with a specific string, use the asterisk (*) with the string. If the asterisk (*) is only in front, then the search results only match the string at the end. If the asterisk (*) is only at the end, the results only match the string at the beginning. If the asterisk is in between letters, then the order of the string match the results.
? To locate files with specific string plus exactly one additional character, use the question mark (?) with the string, for example, 123?.
" " To locate a file with the exact file name, use the quotes (" ") surrounding the full file name (including the extension), for example, "123.sldprt".
= To locate the exact match for a file name, you can instead use the equal sign (=), for example, =123.sldprt. The results are the same as using " ".

Note: If you are searching using the Title option, the file extension is considered for all files. For example, File 123.sldprt ends with prt and not the number 3.

  6. To execute the search, click Search in the Search tab.
Search results are displayed in a Search tab in the upper section of the right pane or to the left of the search card.

The number of files that match the search criteria is displayed.

You can operate on files in the Search tab in the same way you do on files in a folder listing:

    • Double-click to open a file in SOLIDWORKS.
    • Right-click to display menu options.
    • Select options from the Action menus at the top of the window.

When the number of returned files are less than the row limit because other objects were returned, the status bar displays a notification that there are more search results available.

  7. To return to the folder display in the upper right pane, do one of the following:
    • Navigate to another folder.
    • At the top right side of the upper pane, click .
    • At the top right side of the upper pane, close the Search tab by clicking the close button .

Clicking the Search tab again opens the most recently executed search.
