Adding a Symbol to a Symbol Representation

From Symbol Design, you can add several symbol objects to a functional/logical symbol representation.

From Functional & Logical Design or Systems Architecture Design, you can manage multiple symbols in a symbol representation.

This task shows you how to:

Before you begin: Create a logical symbol representation and edit this symbol representation.

Add a New Symbol to a Symbol Representation

You can add a new symbol to a functional/logical symbol representation.

  1. In the New Symbol dialog box, enter a name for the new symbol object.
  2. Click to validate.
  3. Double-click the symbol to activate it.
You can now add text and geometry in this symbol.

Add an Existing Symbol to a Symbol Representation

You can select an existing symbol from catalog or from session and add it to a symbol representation. The new symbol reference can also be created from an existing Drafting 2D Component or an existing diagram view.

  1. From the Symbol Edition section of the action bar, click Add Existing Symbol .
  2. In the New Symbol dialog box, select one of the following options:
    • Catalog if you want to retrieve an existing symbol from the catalog.
    • Session if you want to retrieve an existing symbol from session.

Note: For Drafting 2D Components retrieved in session, only 2D component references designed in detail view can be selected.

  3. Click OK to validate your selection
If you have selected Catalog, the Catalog Browser dialog box appears.
  4. According to your previous selection:
    • Double-click the symbol in the Catalog Browser dialog box.
    • Click the tab containing the existing symbol and click the symbol.
    • In the tree, select the diagram view to be imported as a symbol.
A new symbol appears in the dock area. If any, images and text are added in their respective formats. Table, hatching, arrows and balloons are added as shapes.
    Notes:
    • If the symbol representation contains a connection point mapped with a port, the link between the connection point and the port will be lost when retrieving the existing symbol.
    • For symbols created from Drafting 2D Components, the name of the new symbol is by default copied from selected 2D component.
    • For symbols created from a diagram view, the origin of the new symbol is the center of the frame from the selected diagram view.
  5. Optional: Modify the name of the new symbol.

Add an Alternative Representation to a Symbol Representation

You can create a second symbol under a symbol representation. It allows you to change the display of a symbol instance by switching from the main representation to the alternative one according to the requirement of the diagram view.

For the purpose of this scenario, the representation formed by shapes inside symbol reference is referred as the main representation.

Before you begin: Create a logical symbol representation and edit this symbol representation.
  1. From the Symbol Edition section of the action bar, click Add New Alternative Representation .
The New Symbol dialog box appears.
  2. In the New Alternative Representation dialog box, enter a name for the new symbol object and click .
The alternative representation is created under the main representation and is active in the diagram view. You can now create the second symbol.
    Notes:
    • The business rule can be set in Data Setup to define an alternative representation for a given object.
    • Shapes created in main representation are visible when activating the alternative representation but they are non-editable.
    • Though connection points and Annotations can be created and edited from any representations, they are actually created only in the main representation. They are visible in all the alternative representations.
