Creating a 3D Cut

You can cut through a model using a section box, compute the intersection, and create a lighter model as a 3D shape representation.

Before you begin: Open a product.
  1. Do either of the following:
    • Select Add > Content > Physical Product Structure > VOC3DCut .
    • Right-click the root product node and select Insert > Representation > Physical Product Structure > VOC3DCut .
  2. In the 3D Cut dialog box, select the required elements in the Element(s) to cut and Reference product boxes.
A section box appears in the 3D area.
  3. Under Positioning, click Edit..., and set position and dimensions of the section box.

    Tips:
    • You can use various handles on the section box to modify its position and dimensions.
    • You can click Update on selection option to reset the position and dimensions of the section box according to the selected objects.
    • You can select the Automatic update on selection check box to reset the section box automatically with the selection of objects.

  4. Under Parameters, specify the following options for the section box:

    • From the Cutting Type list, select one of the following options:
      Option Description
Cut inner part Removes material inside the box.
Cut outer part Removes material outside the box.
Tip: You can swap the cutting type by clicking any of the corners of the section box.
    • From the Border Type list, select one of the following options:
      Option Description
Cut the triangles Cuts the triangles on the selection border within the section box. The result is a Boolean intersection between the selected model and the section box; the triangles are cut.
Keep complete or partial triangles Keeps the fully or partially included triangles within the section box.
Keep complete triangles Keeps only fully included triangles within the section box.
      Notes:
      • In case of the Keep complete or partial triangles and Keep complete triangles options, the triangles of the initial mesh intersecting the boundaries of the section box are not delimited. Therefore, the triangles are integrated entirely (or rejected entirely, as defined by the user).
      • The triangles whose vertices are outside the section box are considered fully outside.
    • Visual Feedback: Gives you a preview of the 3D cut.
Note: This option previews only the inner box cut.

  5. Click OK.
The 3D cut is computed. The result is a truncated polygonal mesh lighter than the original selection and is created as a new 3D shape representation.
