Assessing the Inertia Matrix

You can get an assessment of the predefined metric, inertia matrix, in Weight and Balance.

  1. To access the inertia matrix metric, drag Weight and Balance to the 3DDashboard.
  2. Find an element containing metric values, using the 3DSearch, and drag it onto Weight and Balance.

At the top of the window, a blue banner displays the names of the item and the metric on which the focus is made.

Inertia matrix of a selected node is computed using the inertia matrix of the all children's nodes of the respective selection. The inertia matrix of individual leaf nodes, sub-assemblies and sub-products is aggregated to compute the inertia matrix of the selected assembly.

  3. To assess the inertia matrix, click its metric label.

The information computation is based on product structure and on the weight and center of gravity of the individual component. The weight and center of gravity of individual nodes have the same values as the ones in Product Performance Assessment. All these inertia values are computed according to the main inertia axis centered on the center of gravity.

Before aggregating the inertia matrix of child nodes, it is transformed into a coordinate system of parent node. For this transformation, the matrix's position is used to give the rotation and translation measures of the individual nodes with respect to their parent node.

Note: You cannot author an objective inertia matrix, nor store its trend along the time axis.
