Assessing the Center of Gravity

You can get an assessment of the predefined KPI, the center of gravity, in Weight and Balance.

Before you begin:
  • Declare the objective of the center of gravity in Business Target Definition.
  • To support the tolerance on the center of gravity, administrators must define the following default values in Me > Preferences > Weight Management.
    • A default tolerance called Automatic CoG tolerance applied (% of the bounding box dimension) (5% for example), whenever a weight has been computed. It corresponds to the percentage to be applied to the maximum length of the inertia bounding box.
    • The automatic tolerance, Automatic CoG tolerance applied (10mm for example) when editing a declared center of gravity. When a Weight and Balance computation is launched, the tolerance of the center of gravity is displayed in the B.I. Essentials window. You can edit this value only on parts.

For more information, see Weight Analysis.

  1. From the Compass, select Information Intelligence Apps .
  2. To access the center of gravity KPI, drag Weight and Balance to the 3DDashboard.
  3. Search for an element containing KPI values using the 3DSearch and drag it onto Weight and Balance.

At the top of the window, a blue banner displays the names of the item and the KPI on which the focus is made.

Notes: The label contour of the KPI changes according to the computation of the center of gravity relative to its objective and targeted tolerance.

Effective Value vs. Objective Explanation KPI Contour Color

Center of gravity of the item

    Effective tolerance

    Targeted center of gravity

    Targeted tolerance

The center of gravity of the item is far from the targeted center of gravity and both tolerances do not intersect.

    Red

Center of gravity of the item

    Targeted center of gravity

The center of gravity of the item starts to converge towards the targeted center of gravity. Both tolerances intersect. The distance between the two points ( and ) is still bigger than the tolerance of the objective.

    Yellow

Center of gravity of the item

    Targeted center of gravity

Both tolerances intersect. The distance between the point and point is smaller than the targeted tolerance. The center of gravity of the item lies in the scope of the targeted tolerance.

    Green

  4. To show a detailed view of the effective center of gravity, click its KPI label.

The information computation is based on the product's structure.

In the 3D chart, you can compare the center of gravity and its objective. The legend gives the distance between these two points, symbolized by the red line.

  5. Compare the center of gravity to its target.
You can change the coordinates of its objective and tolerance in Business Target Definition.
  6. Compare the computed or declared values of the center of gravity, Objective, Tolerance and Distance, to the ones entered previously in the objectives (objective and tolerance of the center of gravity).
Tip: If you hover over the gauge, a tooltip displays the details about the values.
